Multiple Days Of Severe Weather Target Areas From The Plains Into The Midwest This Week!

Calmer conditions are in place across the central United States early this week as troughing moves across the northern and eastern portions of the country. However, that is going to change late this week into the weekend as upper-level ridging builds in. Under this ridge, the central portions of the United States will see warm, moist air return, while troughing moves into the west and southwest U.S.

Two strong upper-level troughs are set to move across the central U.S. late week into the weekend. Each has its own characteristics, but both provide the needed ingredients for several days of severe weather from the Great Plains into the Midwest and Mississippi Valley regions.

The initial wave that moves through the nation’s heartland will be smaller and more compact. However, it will be robust with strong winds from the surface through the upper levels. At the surface, a warm, moist, unstable environment will be in place. This leading wave will allow for severe weather to impact areas across the southern and central Plains states on Thursday. Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes will be possible. The severe weather threat will shift east on Friday from Texas and Oklahoma north into Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois.

Into the weekend, the severe weather threat will shift back west as a larger upper-level trough moves in. This trough will set the stage for severe weather across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri on Saturday. Sunday, the severe weather threat will shift east across the Missouri and Mississippi Valley region. Both days will feature the threat of damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes.

In addition to the severe weather threat, rain will spread across the nation’s agricultural belt. Several days of rainfall chances will provide relief for areas across the Midwest that are experiencing drought conditions. However, above-average precipitation could result in flooding concerns for some locations.

Overall, the weather pattern will be active late this week through the weekend. We encourage you to stay weather-aware and take necessary precautions during this period of potential severe weather! 🌪️🌧️🌩️
