Why Your Snow Removal Company Needs Winter Weather Consulting.

If you are a snow removal company there is no doubt you are looking forward to this upcoming winter. Especially after the past couple of winters that have left everyone across the Midwest/Great Lakes/Ohio Valley wondering "Where's the beef?" There is no doubt that active winters can bring your company a profit, but there is also no question that active winters can cause headaches when it comes to forecasting storm systems.

Anticipating and having an accurate weather forecast when it comes to winter storms can be crucial. Especially when planning when crews should be out and when they should be resting. That's where Thermodynamic Solutions LLC (TDS Weather) comes in!

We provide your company with the tools to make crucial, cost-effective decisions by relaying accurate, timely, and easy to understand information to you and your crew! We highlight precipitation types, timing, and amounts. Along with wind direction, speeds, and even cloud cover so you can anticipate when and how to treat surfaces. So how are we better than other automated services or apps? Well, I'm glad you asked!

Here are a couple short examples I prepared for you to understand why our service can and will benefit your company. The first example is a forecast of high temperatures in Chicago, IL from today (Tue. Nov. 7 - Sun. Nov. 11) from the 3 top global models.

As you can see, there are many days where there is a large model spread (5°+). In the winter, these are crucial to determining precipitation types & amounts. If you are getting your information from an app or automated service it is likely using one of these models updating your forecast 4 times a day with number spit out from a computer, there is no human element behind it and you’ll receive 4 different forecasts per day!

The second graphic I want to show you is a GIF from the CMC (Canadian model) accumulated snowfall forecast over the past 4 runs of the model through 7 am Wed. 11-15-17. As you can see, there is a large forecast difference from run to run.

While the CMC is not the most reliable model for early season snowfall, I wanted to show this to make a point. If you are using an app or relying on a forecast model alone, one hour you may see a forecast calling for 4"+ of snow only to look back an hour later to see a forecast for 0" of snow and sunny.

This is where having a meteorologist who can interpret these models and put the human element back into the forecasts can be very important and beneficial. At TDS Weather, that's what we do every day. We analyze forecast models knowing they are only tools and will never be perfect. However, with common-sense, experience, knowledge, and skill we can produce a more accurate and reliable forecast for our clients.

So, if you want to take the guesswork and frustration out of forecasting the weather this winter please reach out to us! We would love to help you and your company have the most successful winter season it can.
